Drone Visual Inspection Services
Safer access. Faster inspections. Better asset visibility.

High-resolution drone inspections for industrial assets, infrastructure and hard-to-reach structures.

Accessing elevated, confined or difficult-to-reach assets can be costly, time-consuming and potentially hazardous. Our drone visual inspection services provide a practical alternative to conventional access methods, helping asset owners identify visible defects, assess asset condition and make informed maintenance decisions.

Using remotely piloted aircraft equipped with high-resolution imaging technology, we capture detailed visual data from areas that may otherwise require scaffolding, elevated work platforms or rope access.

The result is a more efficient way to inspect difficult-to-access assets while reducing unnecessary work at height and helping minimise operational disruption.

Industrial Drone Inspections

Our drone inspection services support asset integrity management, maintenance planning and condition assessment across a range of industrial environments.

Applications include:

  • Industrial structures: Elevated steelwork, structural connections, platforms, pipe racks and supporting structures.
  • Tanks and storage facilities: External shell surfaces, roofs, elevated fittings and other accessible visual inspection points.
  • Pressure equipment and process facilities: External visual examination of accessible surfaces, pipework, vessels and associated infrastructure.
  • Oil and gas facilities: Elevated structures, flare-related infrastructure where access and operating conditions permit, and difficult-to-reach plant components.
  • Mining and mineral processing: Conveyors, transfer structures, stockpile infrastructure, plant buildings and elevated equipment.
  • Renewable energy: Wind turbine towers, external blade surfaces and other accessible components requiring visual condition assessment.
  • Buildings and infrastructure: Roofs, façades, bridges and other structures where conventional access may be difficult or expensive.

Each inspection is planned around the asset, the required coverage, environmental conditions and the intended use of the inspection data.

Why Use Drone Visual Inspections?

Reduce access costs

Drone inspections can reduce the need for scaffolding, elevated work platforms and rope access for suitable visual inspection tasks. This can lower access costs and simplify inspection planning.

Improve personnel safety

Keep personnel on the ground where practical by using remote imaging to examine elevated and difficult-to-access areas. Drone inspections can reduce exposure to work-at-height hazards, although safe access arrangements and other controls may still be required.

Minimise operational disruption

Where site conditions and operating requirements permit, inspections can be completed without extensive access installation or major interference with normal operations.

Capture detailed visual evidence

High-resolution imagery and video provide a visual record of asset condition. Captured data can support defect identification, maintenance planning, engineering review and comparison during future inspections.

Inspect difficult-to-reach areas

Drones can access many elevated or obstructed viewing positions that are difficult to inspect from the ground, helping improve visibility of selected asset surfaces and features.

From Visual Inspection to Asset Integrity

A drone is an inspection tool, not simply a camera in the air. The value comes from collecting useful evidence and interpreting it in the context of the asset and its operating requirements.

Our approach focuses on the inspection objectives, the condition information required and the practical decisions the results need to support.

Depending on the scope, deliverables can include:

  • High-resolution photographs and video recordings.
  • Identification and documentation of visible anomalies.
  • Annotated images identifying areas of interest.
  • An organised visual inspection record.
  • A summary report with observations and recommendations for further examination, where appropriate.

Where a potential defect requires further investigation, we can help identify suitable follow-up inspection methods, including conventional visual inspection or appropriate non-destructive testing (NDT).

Drone Inspections for Wind Turbines

Wind turbine blades and towers require effective condition monitoring to identify visible damage and support maintenance planning.

Drone-based visual inspections can help examine accessible external surfaces for indications such as:

  • Visible blade surface damage, erosion and coating deterioration.
  • Leading-edge damage and other observable surface anomalies.
  • Visible cracking, impact damage or repairs requiring further assessment.
  • Tower coating deterioration, corrosion indications and external damage.

For wind farm operators, drone inspections can provide a practical way to gather visual condition data across multiple assets and help prioritise maintenance activities.

Important: Drone visual inspection is not a substitute for every required inspection method. Internal defects, subsurface damage and defects that cannot be resolved visually may require additional examination or specialist NDT.

Our Inspection Process

1. Scope the inspection

We discuss the asset, inspection objectives, site conditions, access restrictions and reporting requirements.

2. Plan the flight

The inspection is planned around safe flight operations, applicable aviation requirements, site procedures, weather conditions and the required image coverage.

3. Capture the data

The drone is operated to obtain appropriate views of the specified inspection areas, subject to access, visibility and environmental limitations.

4. Review and document

Captured imagery is reviewed for visible anomalies and areas requiring attention. Relevant findings are documented in the agreed deliverable.

5. Support the next decision

The results help the asset owner determine whether maintenance, closer examination or additional NDT is warranted.

A Practical Addition to Your Inspection Program

Drone visual inspection can complement existing inspection and asset integrity programs by providing an efficient means of collecting visual evidence from difficult-to-access areas.

It can be particularly valuable when planning routine condition assessments, investigating reported damage, documenting asset condition before and after maintenance, or identifying locations that warrant closer examination.

The appropriate inspection method depends on the asset, the defect types of concern and the level of confidence required.

If you manage industrial assets, mining infrastructure, oil and gas facilities, storage tanks, structural steelwork or renewable energy equipment, we can help assess whether drone visual inspection is suitable for your requirements.

Tell us what needs inspecting, where the asset is located and what information you need from the inspection.

Drone inspections are subject to site access, weather, visibility, aircraft capability and applicable aviation and operational requirements. Inspection coverage and defect detectability depend on the specific conditions and agreed scope. Additional inspection methods may be required to verify suspected defects.
