Wind Turbine Pitch Gear Teeth Fast, Non-Destructive Inspection with Eddy Current.

Wind Turbine Eddy Current Testing (ECT)

Fast, Non-Destructive Inspection of Wind Turbine Gear Teeth

Eddy Current Testing (ECT) provides a fast and effective method for detecting surface and near-surface defects in wind turbine gear components, including gear teeth and other critical drivetrain components.

Using portable Eddy Current probes, inspections can be performed through thin oil films and certain surface coatings, reducing the need for extensive preparation before testing.

Inspect Gear Teeth Without Chemical Cleaning

Traditional inspection methods can require gear teeth to be thoroughly cleaned before examination. With suitable Eddy Current Testing equipment and probes, surface and near-surface discontinuities can often be detected through residual oil films and coatings.

This can significantly reduce inspection preparation time by eliminating or minimising the need to chemically clean the gear teeth before testing.

The result is a more efficient inspection process with:

  • Reduced surface preparation
  • Less use of chemical cleaning products
  • Reduced inspection downtime
  • Faster access to critical gear surfaces
  • Portable equipment suitable for field inspections
  • Detection of surface-breaking and near-surface defects

Detecting Critical Gear Defects

ECT is particularly useful for identifying defects that can develop from fatigue, wear and repeated loading. Depending on the probe, equipment and application, Eddy Current Testing can identify indications associated with:

  • Fatigue cracking
  • Surface-breaking cracks
  • Near-surface cracking
  • Grinding or manufacturing defects
  • Wear-related damage
  • Localised material discontinuities

Early detection of cracking can provide valuable information for maintenance planning and help prevent progressive damage to critical drivetrain components.

Wind Turbine Gearbox Inspection

Wind turbine gearboxes operate under high and continuously varying loads. Gear teeth are therefore subject to cyclic stresses that can contribute to fatigue damage over time.

ECT provides a portable inspection solution for wind turbine maintenance programs, allowing technicians to examine critical gear surfaces without necessarily requiring the level of surface preparation associated with conventional inspection methods.

Where access permits, portable ECT probes can be used to inspect individual gear teeth and other accessible areas of the gearbox.

Reduce Inspection Time and Disruption

For wind farm operators, reducing the time required to prepare and inspect equipment can have a significant operational benefit.

By minimising chemical cleaning and surface preparation, Eddy Current Testing can help streamline the inspection process and reduce the time a turbine needs to remain offline.

ECT can therefore form part of a broader wind turbine condition assessment and NDT program, alongside other inspection techniques such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Visual Testing (VT) and vibration or condition monitoring.

Portable ECT for Wind Turbine Maintenance

Our portable Eddy Current Testing capability is suited to field-based wind turbine inspections where access, preparation time and minimising turbine downtime are important considerations.

Inspection procedures, probe selection, calibration and evaluation criteria are selected according to the component, material, defect type and applicable inspection requirements.
